An Irish Blessing: Little Windows Blowing Rock School Auditorium (click for map) Saturday, August 9th, 2008 at 8 PM
Little
Windows is Mark Weems and Julie Glaub, a folk duo with incredible vocal
blends and harmonies. Julie lived and performed in Ireland, and Mark has
Appalachian roots. About Julie, Mardi Tuminaro from the Irish Arts Center
in NY said, “her clear, sweet but commanding voice stills audiences
whenever she sings.” And about Mark, Aidan O'Hara, Irish author and
song collector, said, “He sings from the heart and is plainly in tune
with the tradition.”
Markand Julee tour together nationally and internationally with a focus on the art of the pure voice with tight harmonies in traditional songs. Instrumentation includes guitar, fiddle, banjo, flute, piano and bodhrán. Mark has been steeped in the Old Time Tradition for years while Julee has done the same in the Traditional Irish realm. Together they bring a beautiful blend of both traditions with a unique harmonic sound that is rare and often beckons the response from audience members, "I've never heard anything like it!" Though they have both made several recordings with other bands as well as solo projects, Julee and Mark have just released their first recording together, Just Beyond Me. It carries a strong Appalachian theme with some Old Time gospel songs as well as two songs composed by Mark Weems himself. Many of the songs are unaccompanied and highlight Mark and Julee's vocals. Special guests include Carl Jones from North Carolina, Pete Sutherland from Vermont, and Mark's father even joins them for an old North Carolina mountain hymn.
